The best High Atlas hikes range from the easy 3–4 hour Imlil–Tamatert–Aroumd village loop to the 6–7 day Toubkal circuit via Lac d'Ifni. For a single day, the Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,489 m) offers the finest views; for a summit, Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) takes two days; and for remote valleys, the M'Goun massif and Aït Bouguemez are the standout multi-day options.

How We Chose These Routes

The routes below are selected for scenery, variety and accessibility from Marrakech, and they cover every level from casual walkers to experienced trekkers. All times are approximate walking times at a steady pace, excluding long breaks. Trails in the Atlas are rarely waymarked and branch constantly between villages and pastures, so a local guide is strongly recommended on all of them and legally required for the Toubkal summit.

1. Imlil–Tamatert–Aroumd Loop

The perfect introduction to the High Atlas. From Imlil (1,740 m) the path climbs through walnut groves to Tamatert and the Tizi n'Tamatert col, then contours around to the rocky village of Aroumd before returning across the valley floor. You pass terraced fields, irrigation channels and mule trains, with Toubkal's northern ridges on the skyline. It is the backbone of most guided day hikes, and often includes lunch or tea in a family home. Background on the village itself is in our Imlil village guide.

2. Imlil to Sidi Chamharouch

This follows the first half of the Toubkal approach: up the Mizane valley past Aroumd, across the stony flood plain and up to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch at around 2,350 m. The final section climbs beside a waterfall to the white-painted marabout and its row of tea stalls. It gives a real taste of the Toubkal trail without the altitude, with roughly 600 m of ascent.

3. Tizi n'Mzik Pass

Many guides consider this the best single-day hike from Imlil. A steady climb west of the village leads through juniper and holm oak to the Tizi n'Mzik pass at 2,489 m, where you look straight into the Toubkal massif on one side and down to the Azzaden valley on the other. Around 750 m of ascent and descent make it a solid day for fit walkers; in spring the pass may still hold snow patches.

4. Jebel Toubkal Summit

North Africa's highest peak is the headline objective of the range. The standard route takes one day to reach the refuge at about 3,200 m and a pre-dawn start for the summit, followed by the full descent to Imlil. It is non-technical in summer but long and high. Full route details, guide rules and refuge information are in our 2-day Toubkal climbing guide, and seasonal conditions are covered in when to climb Toubkal, month by month.

5. Imlil to Setti Fatma via Tacheddirt

A classic traverse linking two famous valleys. From Imlil you walk east to Tacheddirt, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the range at over 2,300 m, then cross the Tizi n'Tacheddirt (around 3,170 m) before descending through remote hamlets into the Ourika valley and Setti Fatma. It is typically done in 2–3 days with overnights in village gîtes, and mules carry your luggage.

6. Toubkal Circuit via Lac d'Ifni

For trekkers with a week, the Toubkal circuit is the finest route in the range. It loops around the massif through the Azzaden valley, the Tizi n'Ouanoums pass (around 3,660 m) and the high mountain lake of Lac d'Ifni (about 2,300 m), usually finishing with a summit of Toubkal from the south. Expect 6–7 walking days of 5–8 hours, nights in gîtes and tents, and a real sense of remoteness. Acclimatisation happens naturally, which makes the summit easier than on the 2-day trip.

7. M'Goun Massif and Aït Bouguemez

In the Central High Atlas, about 4–5 hours' drive from Marrakech, the Aït Bouguemez — nicknamed the "Happy Valley" — is a broad green valley of villages and granaries. From here, treks cross high plateaux to the summit of Ighil M'Goun (4,068 m), one of the highest summits in Morocco, or descend through the dramatic M'Goun gorges, where you wade through the river. Routes run 4–6 days and are best from late May to October.

When to Hike in the High Atlas

  • April–June: green valleys, blossom, long days; snow may linger above 3,000 m until May.
  • July–August: reliable weather and cool mountain air, though midday sun is strong and afternoon storms are possible.
  • September–October: stable conditions and harvest season, often the best overall.
  • November–March: village walks remain good, but high passes and summits require winter equipment and experience.

Essential Tips for Atlas Hikes

  1. Hire a licensed guide: trails are unmarked and local knowledge is invaluable.
  2. Carry 2–3 litres of water and purification tablets for longer treks.
  3. Wear broken-in boots — the terrain is rocky and scree-covered above the villages. Our trekking gear checklist covers the rest.
  4. Carry cash: there are no ATMs beyond the valley towns.
  5. Respect village customs: modest dress and asking before photographing people.

Start with a Guided Day Hike

If you want to try the High Atlas before committing to a multi-day trek, our guided hike through the Imlil villages covers the best of routes 1 and 2, from €45 per person with free Marrakech hotel pickup and lunch with a local family. For the summit itself, the Toubkal 2-day trek starts from €150 per person. See every route we run on our High Atlas trekking tours page, or ask us on WhatsApp about customised multi-day itineraries.
