Mount Toubkal 2-Day Summit Trek from Imlil

2 days / 1 night Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup); trek starts in Imlil Private or small group (max 10)

The Mount Toubkal 2-Day Summit Trek from Imlil is a guided climb of North Africa's highest mountain (4,167 m) for fit hikers with no technical climbing experience, with one night in the Toubkal refuge. It starts from €150 per person including Marrakech transfers, a licensed mountain guide, a mule for luggage and all meals on the trek, in a small group or private.

North Africa's highest summit in two days

Jebel Toubkal rises to 4,167 metres in the heart of the High Atlas, inside Toubkal National Park. In summer and autumn it is a non-technical walk-up, but a serious one: you gain more than 2,400 metres of altitude from Imlil in two days and walk around 35 km in total. The two-day format suits fit, regular hikers; if you want to acclimatise more gently, ask about the three-day version.

How the trek works

  • Day 1: Imlil (1,740 m) to the Toubkal refuge (3,207 m), about 5 to 6 hours of walking via the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch
  • Day 2: pre-dawn start to the summit, about 3 to 4 hours up the south cirque, then descent all the way to Imlil, about 6 to 7 hours
  • Mule carries your main luggage to the refuge, so you only need a day pack
  • Licensed mountain guide leads the group, sets the pace and decides on conditions

The refuge night

You sleep in the Toubkal refuge (Refuge du Toubkal or Les Mouflons, depending on availability), a stone mountain hut with dormitory bunks, blankets and shared bathrooms. Dinner is hot and filling, typically soup, tagine or pasta, and you go to bed early before a pre-dawn start. It is basic but warm; bring a sleeping-bag liner and earplugs.

Fitness, altitude and seasons

You should be comfortable walking 6 to 8 hours on steep, rocky paths. Above 3,000 metres many people feel the altitude, with headaches or shortness of breath; your guide keeps a slow, steady pace and will turn back if needed. From May to October the route is free of snow and needs only good hiking boots. From December to April snow and ice make crampons and an ice axe essential; these can be hired in Imlil, and the trek becomes a winter mountaineering ascent that suits experienced hikers.

Our detailed guide to climbing Mount Toubkal in 2 days describes the route stage by stage, and the Toubkal trek packing list tells you which gear really matters.

Private option

A private trek lets you set your own pace, add an extra acclimatisation night or combine the summit with a longer Atlas circuit.
