Blue fishing boats in Essaouira harbour with the stone ramparts and seagulls behind, Atlantic coast of Morocco

Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech

1 day (11 h) Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup) Private or small group (max 16)

The Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech is an 11-hour excursion to Morocco's Atlantic port town for travellers who want sea air, seafood and a calmer medina, with hotel pickup and an air-conditioned vehicle. Small-group seats start from €30 per person, with private departures available.

From the Red City to the Atlantic in one day

Essaouira lies about 190 km west of Marrakech, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way on a good road across the Chiadma plain. Along the way you stop at an argan oil women's cooperative to see how kernels are cracked and pressed by hand, and you may spot the famous goats that climb argan trees to feed on the fruit. You then have around five hours in town, enough to see the essentials without rushing.

What to see in Essaouira

The old town, listed by UNESCO in 2001, is an 18th-century fortified port laid out by a French engineer for Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. Its whitewashed houses and blue shutters feel very different from Marrakech, and the lanes are flat, compact and easy to navigate on your own.

  • The fishing port, with its blue wooden boats and the daily catch landed on the quay
  • Skala de la Ville, the seafront ramparts lined with bronze cannons, used as a filming location in Game of Thrones
  • Thuya wood workshops under the ramparts, where local craftsmen inlay boxes and furniture
  • The long sandy beach, a favourite with kitesurfers thanks to the steady trade wind

Lunch by the harbour

Lunch is not included, which lets you choose. The simplest and most memorable option is the row of grill stalls by the port, where you pick fresh sardines, sea bream or prawns and have them grilled on the spot. Agree the price before cooking. Sit-down restaurants in the medina also serve fish tagine and seafood pastilla.

Practical tips

Essaouira is usually 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Marrakech and often windy, so bring a light jacket even in summer. That same wind makes it a welcome escape during the hot months of July and August. Shops in the medina sell thuya wood, argan products and textiles at prices generally lower and with less pressure than the Marrakech souks.

Private option

A private departure lets you add a stop at a vineyard near the coast, visit the beach at Sidi Kaouki, or simply stay later to watch the sunset over the ramparts.
