Ourika river flowing past terraced Amazigh villages beneath the High Atlas Mountains near Setti Fatma, Morocco

Ourika Valley & Atlas Mountains Day Trip

1 day (8 h) Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup) Private or small group (max 16)

The Ourika Valley & Atlas Mountains Day Trip is an 8-hour excursion from Marrakech for travellers who want a first taste of the High Atlas, combining an Amazigh village visit with a guided walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. It includes hotel pickup and starts from €25 per person in a small group, with private departures available.

The closest Atlas valley to Marrakech

The Ourika Valley begins barely 30 km from Marrakech, and the road climbs gently to the village of Setti Fatma, around 65 km away and 1,500 metres above sea level. The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, so you spend more of the day walking and less in the vehicle than on any other mountain trip. The air is noticeably fresher than in the city, and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas are visible for much of the year.

What the day includes

  • Amazigh village house: a stop at a traditional earth-built home in Tnine Ourika or a hillside hamlet, with mint tea and bread baked in a clay oven
  • Argan cooperative: see how women crack and press argan kernels for cosmetic and culinary oil
  • Setti Fatma waterfalls: a guided hike with a local mountain guide to the first of the seven cascades
  • Riverside lunch: tables set on platforms over the Ourika river (own expense)

The Setti Fatma hike, honestly described

The walk to the first waterfall takes around 30 to 45 minutes each way and involves crossing the river on small bridges and scrambling over large boulders. It is not technical, but it is steep in places and slippery after rain, so trainers or walking shoes with grip are essential; sandals are not suitable. Fit walkers can continue towards the higher falls with the guide, which adds around an hour. Less confident walkers can stay in the village by the river.

Best time to go

Spring, from March to May, brings strong waterfalls, almond and cherry blossom and green terraces. Summer is popular with Marrakchis escaping the heat, so the valley is busier at weekends. In winter, snow can appear on the higher slopes and the river runs full; the hike may be shortened after heavy rain for safety.

Good for families and short stays

Because the drive is short and the return is by late afternoon, this is the easiest Atlas trip to fit into a two- or three-day stay in Marrakech, and it works well for children who can manage a rocky path with an adult.

Questions about this tour

It is a 30 to 45 minute walk each way with river crossings and some boulder scrambling. It suits most reasonably fit adults and children, but you need shoes with good grip.

Setti Fatma, at the head of the valley, is about 65 km from Marrakech, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road. That makes it the quickest way to reach the High Atlas from the city.

Lunch is not included, so you can choose from the riverside restaurants in Setti Fatma. A tagine lunch there typically costs a modest amount and is paid directly.
