In this guide
The best day trips from Marrakech are the Ouzoud Waterfalls (about 3 hours away), the coastal town of Essaouira (about 2.5–3 hours), the Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma (about 1–1.5 hours), the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (about 3.5–4 hours) and the Agafay stone desert (about 45 minutes). Pick short trips like Ourika or Agafay if you have only half a day, and save Aït Benhaddou or Essaouira for a full 11–12 hour day.
How to Choose a Day Trip from Marrakech
Marrakech sits at roughly 450 m altitude on the Haouz plain, with the High Atlas 40–60 km to the south and the Atlantic 190 km to the west. That geography gives you four families of excursions: Atlas valleys (Ourika, Imlil, Ouirgane), waterfalls (Ouzoud, Setti Fatma), desert landscapes (Agafay, and the pre-Saharan south via Aït Benhaddou) and the coast (Essaouira).
Three variables decide which one suits you:
- Drive time. Anything above 3 hours each way means a 10–12 hour day. Motion-sick travellers should note that the Tichka and Ourika roads are winding.
- Season. Waterfalls peak from March to June; the Atlas can see snow above 2,000 m from December to March; July and August push Marrakech above 40°C, which makes the cooler coast and mountains more attractive.
- Private or group. Shared minibuses are cheapest; private vehicles let you control stops and timing. We compare the two in detail in our guide to choosing between private and shared tours.

The Full-Day Classics
1. Ouzoud Waterfalls
At around 110 m, the tiered Cascades d'Ouzoud in Azilal province are the highest falls in North Africa. Entry to the site is free; you pay for parking, a short raft ride to the base of the falls (roughly 10–20 MAD, approximate) and lunch at a terrace above the gorge. Wild Barbary macaques live in the olive groves on the trail. Our Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip from Marrakech runs about 10 hours and starts from €30 per person. For trails, water levels and what to wear, read the complete Ouzoud visitor guide.
2. Essaouira
A walled 18th-century Atlantic port whose medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Expect ramparts lined with bronze cannons, a working fishing harbour with blue boats and grilled-fish stalls, and a wide beach that the trade winds make ideal for kitesurfing. The drive crosses argan country, with cooperative stops en route. See our hour-by-hour Essaouira plan.
3. Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate
The most demanding day trip and, for film and architecture fans, the most rewarding. The route climbs the N9 over the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass to the fortified earthen village of Aït Benhaddou (UNESCO, 1987), used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Plan on 7–8 hours in the vehicle. Our Aït Benhaddou visiting guide covers fees and timing.
Half-Day and Short Trips
4. Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma
The closest Atlas valley: a river road lined with walnut trees, clay villages and riverside restaurants, ending at Setti Fatma (around 1,500 m), where a scramble of 20–45 minutes reaches the first of seven cascades. The Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains day trip takes 8 hours, from €25 per person.
5. Agafay Desert
A rocky hamada, not sand dunes, just 45 minutes from the city, with camps offering camel rides, quad bikes and dinner under the stars. It is ideal when you lack the three days needed for the Sahara; we compare the two honestly in Agafay or the real Sahara?
6. Imlil and the Toubkal foothills
Imlil (1,740 m) is the trailhead for Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 m. A day hike links Berber hamlets such as Aroumd through walnut and apple terraces. The Imlil Berber villages hike runs from €45 per person.
7–8. Palmeraie and balloon flights
For something close to town, the Palmeraie's 13,000 hectares of palms host quad and camel circuits, while sunrise balloon flights take off about 30 km north of the city and land around mid-morning.
Lesser-Known Options Worth Considering
- Ouirgane Valley – a quieter pine-and-juniper valley on the road to the Tizi n'Test, with a reservoir and small eco-lodges.
- Lalla Takerkoust – a reservoir lake at the foot of the Atlas, used for kayaking and lunch with mountain views; water levels vary markedly after dry winters.
- Oukaïmeden – Morocco's main ski station at around 2,600 m, with prehistoric rock carvings; snow cover is unreliable, so check conditions before going.
- Telouet – the crumbling kasbah of the Glaoui pashas, a 20 km detour off the Tichka road, often combined with Aït Benhaddou. Our guide to driving the Tizi n'Tichka road explains how to fit it in.
Practical Tips for Any Day Trip
- Departure times: most full-day tours leave between 7:00 and 8:00 and return between 18:00 and 20:00.
- Cash: carry 200–400 MAD in small notes for lunch (typically 80–150 MAD for a set tagine menu), tips, local guides and toilets. Card acceptance outside Marrakech is limited.
- Clothing: closed shoes with grip for Ouzoud and Setti Fatma; a warm layer for the Atlas even in summer, as temperatures at 2,000 m run 10–15°C cooler than the city.
- Weather: heavy autumn or spring storms can close mountain roads or make river crossings unsafe. Reputable operators will reschedule.
- Combining trips: do not stack two long drives back to back; alternate a 12-hour day with a half-day trip or a rest day in the medina.
Which Trip Should You Book First?
If you have a single free day and want the most variety for the price, Ouzoud combines scenery, wildlife and a proper hike, which is why it is our default recommendation. First-time visitors short on energy should pick Ourika; photographers and film fans should choose Aït Benhaddou; anyone craving sea air in July should head to Essaouira.
All our excursions include free pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, licensed local drivers and guides, and a choice of private or small-group departures. Browse every option on our Marrakech day trips page, or message us on WhatsApp if you want to adapt an itinerary to your dates.
