In this guide
Shared day trips from Marrakech are the cheapest option, with fixed itineraries, set departure times and minibuses of typically 8–17 people. Private tours cost more per person but give you your own vehicle and driver, flexible timing and stops, and they become good value for groups of 3–6. Choose shared for budget and simple routes, private for families, photographers and long drives like Aït Benhaddou.
What "Shared" and "Private" Actually Mean
Terminology varies between operators, so check what is included before you book:
- Shared (group) tour: you join other travellers in a minibus, typically a 17-seat Mercedes Sprinter or similar, sometimes fully booked. The route, stops and timing are fixed.
- Small-group tour: a capped group, often up to 8–12 people, in a smaller van. Still a fixed programme, but quicker boarding and a more personal feel.
- Private tour: only your party in the vehicle, usually a 4x4, sedan or minivan, with the driver (and guide, where included) working for you all day.
- Private transfer only: a driver without a guide; you explore sites independently or hire local guides on the spot.
Cost Comparison
Shared tours are priced per person; private tours are priced mainly per vehicle and then divided by the number of travellers. That is why private tours cost significantly more for a solo traveller or couple, but the gap narrows sharply for families. As a rough guide (approximate, varying with season and destination):
| Party size | Shared tour | Private tour | Value verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | Lowest cost | Often 3–5 times the shared price | Shared, unless flexibility is essential |
| 2 people | Low | Often 2–3 times per person | Depends on priorities |
| 3–4 people | Low | Often 1.5–2 times per person | Private often worth it |
| 5–7 people | Low | Close to shared per person | Private usually best value |
For reference, our shared excursions start from €25 per person for the Ourika Valley, from €30 for Essaouira and Ouzoud, from €40 for Aït Benhaddou and from €45 for the Agafay desert evening. Private prices are quoted per group on request.
Pros and Cons of Shared Tours
Advantages
- Lowest price, especially for solo travellers.
- Easy to book at short notice; daily departures on popular routes.
- Social: good for meeting other travellers.
Disadvantages
- Pickup rounds can take 30–60 minutes as the bus collects everyone from different hotels.
- Fixed stops, including commercial stops such as cooperatives, even if you are not interested.
- Pace set by the slowest member of the group; less time where you would like more.
- Larger vehicles are less comfortable on winding roads such as the Tichka pass.
Pros and Cons of Private Tours
Advantages
- You choose the departure time; leaving at 07:00 beats the crowds at Ouzoud and Setti Fatma.
- Stops on request: a photo on the Tichka summit, an extra hour in Essaouira's medina, skipping a shop.
- Better for children (car seats can be arranged), older travellers and anyone prone to motion sickness.
- Possible to combine sites, for example Aït Benhaddou with a detour to Telouet.
- Your guide adapts explanations to your interests: architecture, food, film locations, geology.
Disadvantages
- Higher cost for one or two people.
- Usually needs booking at least a day in advance in peak season.
Which Format Suits Each Destination?
- Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate: 7–8 hours of mountain driving. Private is strongly preferable for comfort and stops; read our Tizi n'Tichka road guide to see why.
- Essaouira: a straight, easy road. Shared works well; private is useful if you want to linger or visit Sidi Kaouki beach. Our Essaouira day plan helps you judge how much time you need.
- Ouzoud Waterfalls: shared is fine; private lets you arrive before the tour buses.
- Ourika Valley: short and easy; either works. Private helps if you want to skip or add village stops.
- Agafay Desert: most camps mix guests anyway, so shared transport is usually sufficient.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Is hotel or riad pickup included, and where exactly? Many medina riads are in car-free lanes, so pickup is often at the nearest accessible point.
- What is the maximum group size?
- Does the price include a guide at the site, or only a driver?
- Are entry fees, lunch and optional activities (rafts, camel rides) included?
- Is the vehicle air-conditioned, and what type is it?
- What happens if weather closes a mountain road: refund or reschedule?
- Are the driver and guide licensed? Only official guides may legally guide inside heritage sites and medinas.
Safety and Licensing
Licensed tourist transport in Morocco carries specific authorisations and insurance, and official guides hold a badge issued by the tourism authorities. Unlicensed "faux guides" and informal drivers are cheaper but carry no insurance cover if something goes wrong. Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on a day trip?
Tipping is customary but not compulsory. On shared tours, 20–50 MAD per person for the driver and a similar amount for the guide is common; on private tours, groups often tip 100–200 MAD in total per person working, depending on satisfaction.
Can a shared tour be made private at short notice?
Often yes, subject to vehicle availability, especially outside the peak weeks of Easter, late December and August. The earlier you ask, the more likely it is.
Are lunch stops included?
Usually the stop is included but the meal is not. Shared tours often use set-menu restaurants chosen by the operator; on a private tour you can ask for a simpler café or a picnic instead.
Our Recommendation
Solo travellers and couples on a budget should take shared tours for short, easy routes and consider upgrading to private for the long mountain days. Families and groups of three or more will usually find private the better experience for little extra cost. If you want to test the format on a straightforward route, the Essaouira excursion from Marrakech runs about 11 hours from €30 per person, with both small-group and private departures.
