In this guide
Aït Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) about 190 km south-east of Marrakech, reached in 3.5–4 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and 30 km from Ouarzazate. There is no official fee to enter the ksar itself, though some houses charge 10–50 MAD to go inside. You can see it in a long 12-hour day trip from Marrakech, or more calmly with an overnight stay.
What Is Aït Benhaddou?
A ksar is a fortified village of rammed-earth (pisé) and mud-brick houses enclosed by defensive walls, typical of the pre-Saharan valleys of southern Morocco. Aït Benhaddou climbs a hill on the left bank of the Oued Ounila, with clustered houses, several kasbahs (fortified tower houses), a mosque, a public square, threshing floors, two cemeteries and, at the summit, the ruins of a collective granary (agadir). UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987 as an outstanding example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture.
A Short History
The site sat on the caravan route that linked Marrakech with the Draa valley and the Sahara, via the Tizi n'Telouet pass. Caravans carrying salt, gold, dates and slaves passed along the Ounila valley, and the ksar controlled and supplied that traffic. Most of the buildings visible today date from the 17th century onward, though the location was settled much earlier. In the early 20th century the region fell under the power of the Glaoui family, whose base at Telouet lies upstream.
When the new N9 road over the Tichka opened in 1936 and modern Ouarzazate grew, the caravan economy collapsed. Most families moved to the new village across the river, which has electricity and running water. Only a handful of families still live inside the old ksar, mostly running shops and guesthouses. Restoration has been supported by UNESCO and by the film productions that use the site.
Aït Benhaddou on Screen
Its setting between desert and snow-capped Atlas, 30 km from the film studios of Ouarzazate, has made Aït Benhaddou one of the most filmed villages in Africa. Productions shot here or nearby include:
- Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
- The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
- Jewel of the Nile (1985)
- The Mummy (1999)
- Gladiator (2000), including the slave-market arena scenes
- Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
- Game of Thrones, where it stood in for the city of Yunkai
Some set elements, such as a decorative gate built for a film production, remain at the foot of the hill. In Ouarzazate, Atlas Studios is open daily from around 08:30 with guided tours of standing sets; entry is roughly 80 MAD, plus about 40 MAD for the separate Kingdom of Heaven set (approximate 2026 figures).
How to Visit the Ksar
Getting in
From the new village, cross the Ounila riverbed. When the water is low you walk across on sandbags and stepping stones; a pedestrian bridge further along offers a dry crossing year-round. The main entrance leads into steep alleys lined with craft shops.
Fees
There is no official ticket for the ksar. You may be asked for money at some doorways; that is only for visiting inside private houses, which are optional and typically cost 10–50 MAD. A local guide costs around 100–200 MAD per group for an hour, and is included on most organised tours.
The walk to the granary
Climbing to the ruined agadir at the top takes 15–25 minutes on uneven steps. From there you see the whole ksar, the Ounila valley and, on clear days in winter and spring, snow on the High Atlas. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the complete visit.
Timing and Seasons
| Period | Daytime temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–May | 20–30°C | Ideal; almond and green barley in the valleys |
| Jun–Aug | 35–42°C | Very hot in the afternoon; visit early or late |
| Sep–Nov | 22–32°C | Excellent light, fewer groups |
| Dec–Feb | 12–18°C | Cold nights; snow may delay the Tichka pass |
The earthen walls glow orange in the last hour of sunlight, which is why photographers often stay overnight. On a day trip from Marrakech you usually arrive around midday, when the light is flatter but the alleys are quieter than you might expect.
Day Trip or Overnight?
A day trip covers roughly 380–400 km of mountain road and 7–8 hours of driving. The route itself, over the 2,260 m Tichka pass with stops at Berber villages and viewpoints, is part of the experience; read our guide to the Tichka mountain road before choosing. If you tend to get carsick or prefer a slower pace, consider overnighting in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, or combining it with the desert on the two-day Zagora desert tour. For a private vehicle and flexible stops, compare formats in our private vs group tour breakdown.
Tips for Your Visit
- Wear shoes with grip for the steep, dusty steps and the river crossing.
- Bring a hat and 1.5–2 litres of water; there is little shade on the upper ksar.
- Ask before photographing residents and at doorways.
- Painters in the ksar produce "invisible ink" artworks using saffron and tea, heated over a flame to reveal the image; prices are negotiable.
- Carry cash; ATMs are available in Ouarzazate but not reliably in the village.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Aït Benhaddou worth the long drive?
If you are interested in architecture, film or southern Moroccan landscapes, yes. The drive itself crosses the full width of the High Atlas, so the day shows you mountain villages, a 2,260 m pass and the pre-Saharan valleys as well as the ksar.
Can you sleep inside the ksar?
A few small guesthouses operate in and immediately around the old village, and many more in the new village across the river. Staying lets you see the ksar at sunset and sunrise with almost nobody on the paths.
What else is there in Ouarzazate?
Besides Atlas Studios, the Taourirt Kasbah, a former Glaoui residence in the centre of Ouarzazate, has decorated rooms open to visitors for a small fee. The city is also the gateway to the Draa and Dades valleys.
