Terraced fields and earth-built Amazigh houses in the Imlil valley beneath the snow-capped High Atlas, Morocco

Imlil & Berber Villages Day Hike in the High Atlas

1 day (8 h) Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup); hike starts in Imlil Private or small group (max 12)

The Imlil & Berber Villages Day Hike is an 8-hour guided walk in the High Atlas for travellers who want real mountain scenery and village life without a summit climb, with around 4 to 5 hours of hiking. It includes return transfers from Marrakech, a licensed mountain guide and lunch in an Amazigh home, from €45 per person in a small group or private.

Imlil: the gateway to the High Atlas

Imlil sits at 1,740 metres at the head of the Asni valley, about 65 km and 1.5 hours from Marrakech. It is the starting point for Toubkal treks, but the surrounding valleys are just as rewarding for day hikers: terraced fields of barley, walnut and cherry trees, irrigation channels and flat-roofed stone and earth villages that cling to the slopes. The snowy summits around Toubkal are visible for much of the year.

The route

Your licensed mountain guide adapts the route to the group and the season, but a typical loop covers around 10 to 12 km with about 500 to 600 metres of ascent:

  • Imlil to Tamatert, climbing through walnut groves above the valley
  • Tizi n'Tamatert pass (around 2,280 m) with views over the Imnane valley and the Toubkal massif
  • Imnane valley villages, traditional hamlets where daily life still follows the agricultural calendar
  • Return to Aroumd (Armed), one of the highest villages in the valley at around 1,900 m, then down to Imlil

Lunch with an Amazigh family

Around midday you stop in a village home for lunch: fresh bread, salads and a tagine cooked over a wood fire, followed by mint tea. It is a chance to see the inside of a traditional house and learn about Amazigh hospitality from your guide, who is usually from the valley himself.

Difficulty and what to bring

The hike is moderate: paths are well used but rocky and sometimes steep, so you need decent fitness and walking shoes or boots with good grip. No technical skills are needed. Bring a day pack with water, sunscreen, a hat and a warm layer, as the weather in the mountains changes quickly and it can be cold at the pass even when Marrakech is hot. In winter, snow can cover the higher sections, and your guide may choose a lower route. For something gentler, ask for the valley-floor version without the pass.

Before you go, our Imlil village guide explains the area, and the best hikes in the High Atlas covers other routes if you want to come back for more.

Private hikes

Private groups can extend the hike, add a visit to the Kasbah du Toubkal or combine it with the Ouirgane valley.
