A Sahara desert tour from Marrakech costs roughly €80–€150 per person for a 2-day Zagora trip and €130–€250 per person for a 3-day Merzouga trip on a shared small-group basis, with private tours and luxury camps costing more. Prices usually include transport, a driver, one or two hotel or camp nights with dinner and breakfast, and the camel ride; lunches, drinks, optional guides and tips are typically extra, adding roughly €20–€40 per person per day.
What drives the price
Five variables explain most of the difference between two quotes that look similar:
- Destination and length: Zagora (about 360 km) fits in 2 days; Merzouga (about 560 km) needs 3 or more.
- Shared or private: a private vehicle and driver cost the same whether you are two or four, so private tours become much cheaper per head as group size grows.
- Camp category: luxury tents with en-suite bathrooms typically add roughly €40–€120 per person per night.
- Hotel standard en route: a simple Dades guesthouse versus a restored kasbah hotel.
- Season: Easter, Christmas and New Year push prices and availability.
Typical 2026 price ranges
| Tour | Shared small group (pp, approx.) | Private for 2 (pp, approx.) | Our price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days / 1 night Zagora | €80–€150 | €180–€300 | From €85 per person |
| 3 days / 2 nights Merzouga | €130–€250 | €300–€500 | From €140 per person |
| 4 days / 3 nights Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga | €220–€380 | €420–€700 | From €240 per person |
Market ranges are approximate and vary by operator, season and camp. Very cheap offers often cut costs through large buses, crowded camps or unplanned shopping stops.

Tipping on a desert tour
Tipping is customary but voluntary. As a rough guide, travellers often give the driver around €5–€10 per person per day, the camel guide €2–€5 per person, and camp staff a small amount collectively. Adjust according to the service you receive and the size of your group. Carry small notes in dirhams; coins and 20 MAD notes are handy for toilets and parking.
Shared or private: which is better value?
For solo travellers and couples, shared small-group tours are the most economical, since vehicle and driver costs are split between up to around 16 people. From three or four travellers upwards, a private tour often costs little more per person and gives you control over stops, pace and hotel choice. Our guide to private and shared tours from Marrakech explains the trade-offs in more detail.
Is Zagora or Merzouga better value?
Zagora is cheaper in absolute terms and takes one day less, but the dunes are much smaller. Merzouga costs more but delivers the tall Erg Chebbi dunes and the Dades and Todra gorges on the way. Our Zagora versus Merzouga comparison helps you decide whether the extra day is worth it for you.
How to avoid overpaying
- Get the inclusions in writing: number of nights, camp type, meals and whether pickup is from your riad.
- Ask whether the tour is shared or private and the maximum group size.
- Check whether the camp tent is private for your party.
- Budget for lunches and tips so the final cost does not surprise you.
- Book luxury camps early for peak dates.
If a luxury upgrade is on your list, our breakdown of luxury versus standard desert camps shows what the extra money buys.
Sample budget for a 3-day Merzouga trip
To see how the numbers add up, here is an approximate budget for one person on a shared 3-day Merzouga tour with a standard camp, travelling in spring:
| Item | Approx. cost per person |
|---|---|
| Tour price (transport, driver, 2 nights, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, camel) | From €140 |
| 3 lunches on the road | €30–€50 |
| Water, soft drinks and coffee stops | €8–€15 |
| Optional guide or entrances along the way | €5–€15 |
| Tips for driver, camel guide and camp staff | €20–€35 |
| Souvenirs (scarf, rose water, fossils) | Optional |
| Realistic total | About €200–€255 before souvenirs |
A luxury camp upgrade, a private vehicle or peak-season travel would move this total upwards; a larger private group would bring the per-person transport cost down.
Paying for your tour
Most local operators take a deposit to confirm the booking and the balance in cash or by card on the day of departure. Keep enough dirhams for lunches, drinks and tips, since card payment is rarely accepted at roadside restaurants, camps or cooperatives. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate, Boumalne, Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani, but not always in Merzouga itself, so withdraw what you need before the last stretch into the desert.
Budget tips
- Travel in January, early March or September for better availability.
- Choose a 2-day Zagora trip if your time or budget is limited.
- Share a private tour with friends: four people in one vehicle often pay close to shared-tour prices.
- Buy large 5-litre water bottles to refill your own bottle rather than small bottles at each stop.
