Hanging metal lanterns in the Souk Haddadine, Marrakech medina

Marrakech Medina & Souks Guided Walking Tour

3–4 h Marrakech medina (hotel/riad meeting point) Private or small group (max 12)

The Marrakech Medina & Souks Guided Walking Tour is a 3 to 4-hour walk with a licensed official guide for first-time visitors who want to understand the old city and find their way around its souks with confidence. It starts from €25 per person in a small group, with private tours available and pickup from your hotel or riad.

Why take a guide in the medina

The Marrakech medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, covers around 600 hectares of lanes, derbs and markets inside nine kilometres of earthen ramparts. It is fascinating, but also easy to get lost in and full of unofficial guides offering to show you the way. A licensed guide, recognisable by an official badge, shows you the highlights in a logical order, explains the history behind them and helps you avoid the common tourist traps.

What you see

  • Koutoubia Mosque: its 77-metre minaret, built in the 12th century under the Almohads, is the landmark of the city (viewed from outside; non-Muslims cannot enter mosques in Morocco)
  • Bahia Palace: a 19th-century vizier's palace with painted cedar ceilings, zellij tilework and courtyard gardens
  • The Mellah: the historic Jewish quarter, its spice market and the Lazama synagogue area
  • Saadian Tombs or Ben Youssef Madrasa, depending on opening times and crowds
  • The souks: the dyers', metalworkers', leather and spice quarters, with stops at genuine artisan workshops
  • Jemaa el-Fna: the great square, with tips on how to enjoy it in the evening

Shopping without pressure

Your guide will explain how haggling works and what fair prices look like, but shopping is never compulsory and there is no obligation to buy in any workshop you visit. If there is something specific you want, such as a rug, lanterns or spices, tell your guide at the start. Our guide to haggling in the Marrakech souks is useful reading before you go.

Practical details

Tours run in the morning, which is cooler and quieter, with an afternoon option from October to April. The walk covers around 4 to 5 km on flat but uneven lanes, so comfortable shoes are important. Entrance fees to the palace and monuments are not included, so you only pay for the sites you choose to enter. Shoulders and knees covered is the respectful norm, though not strictly required.

At the end of the tour, your guide will leave you near Jemaa el-Fna or accompany you back to your riad. Before an evening visit to the square, read our Jemaa el-Fna square guide on food stalls, performers and the scams to avoid.

Private tours

A private guide adapts the route to your interests, whether architecture, food, photography or Jewish heritage, and is ideal for families.

Questions about this tour

It is not required, but a licensed guide saves time, explains the history and helps you avoid unofficial guides and common scams. Many visitors take a guided tour on day one and explore alone afterwards.

No, entry to Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and Ben Youssef Madrasa is paid separately on site. This way you only pay for the monuments you choose to visit.

You will pass artisan workshops in the souks, but there is never an obligation to buy. Tell your guide if you would rather skip shopping stops entirely.
