In 2026 a standard shared hot air balloon flight in Marrakech costs roughly €95–€180 per person. That usually covers hotel pickup, a flight of about 45–60 minutes at sunrise, and a Berber breakfast. Private baskets cost about €550–€750 per person. Licensed operators fly under Moroccan civil aviation rules and cancel when the wind is unsafe, so ballooning here has a good safety record.

A balloon flight is the most expensive activity in most Marrakech itineraries, and it gets the most questions: why prices vary so much, whether it is safe, and whether it is worth getting up at 5 am. Below are figures from operators flying in 2026, plus what actually happens on the day. All prices are approximate and depend on season and group size.

How Much Does a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Marrakech Cost?

Price depends mainly on three things: how many people share the basket, how you get to the launch site, and what extras come with the flight. The actual time in the air is much the same across operators.

Flight typeApprox. price per personTypical inclusions
Standard shared basket (12–20 people)€95–€180Pickup, 45–60 min flight, tea and breakfast, flight certificate
Combo (balloon + camel ride or quad)€110–€200As above plus a short camel ride or quad session
Premium small basket (4–8 people)€220–€350Smaller group, upgraded breakfast, often a 4x4 transfer
Private basket (2–4 people)€550–€750Exclusive basket, flexible pickup, gourmet breakfast

Our sunrise hot air balloon flight over Marrakech costs from €160 per person. It includes riad pickup, the flight with a licensed pilot, and breakfast in a Berber tent. Children usually pay a reduced rate, and most operators accept children from about 5–6 years old.

Why is one quote so much cheaper than another?

Very low street prices usually mean a larger basket, a shared minibus with many pickups, or an extra charge for the breakfast or the certificate. Check the basket size, whether pickup is included, and the cancellation terms. Reputable operators give a full refund or a new date if they cancel because of weather.

What to Expect: The Morning Timeline

  1. Pickup, about 5:00–6:00 am. The time moves with sunrise: earlier in summer, later in winter. Riads in the medina usually meet you at the nearest gate where a car can reach.
  2. Drive, 30–45 minutes. Most launch sites are north or northeast of the city near the Jbilet hills, where the ground is open and there are no power lines.
  3. Tea and inflation, 30 minutes. You watch the crew inflate the envelope with cold air from fans and then with the burner. The pilot gives a safety briefing.
  4. Flight, 45–60 minutes. Balloons usually cruise at 300–1,000 m. On clear winter mornings you can see the snow-covered High Atlas, including Toubkal at 4,167 m.
  5. Landing and breakfast. You land in open fields, then have msemen, eggs, honey and mint tea. You are back at your riad around 10:00–11:00.

Is a Balloon Ride in Marrakech Safe?

Commercial ballooning in Morocco is regulated by the civil aviation authority. Pilots must hold commercial licences, and balloons are inspected. Good operators follow a few clear rules:

  • They make a go/no-go decision on the morning, based on wind. Flights usually need surface winds under about 15 km/h.
  • They give a pre-flight briefing on the landing position: knees bent, back against the basket, holding the rope handles.
  • They keep the basket within its certified passenger limit and carry a fire extinguisher and radio on board.
  • They have insurance that covers passengers.

Ask the operator to confirm licensing and insurance. Flights are generally not recommended during pregnancy, for people with recent surgery or serious back problems, or for anyone unable to stand for an hour. Landings can be bumpy, so tell the pilot about any mobility issues in advance.

Best Time of Year to Fly

Balloons fly all year. Conditions change with the season:

  • October–April: The clearest air and the best chance of snow on the Atlas. Mornings on the ground are cold, around 3–8 °C in December–January.
  • May–September: Calm, warm mornings, but haze can soften the views, and pickup can be as early as 4:30 am.
  • Spring and autumn sell out first, so book 1–2 weeks ahead in those months.

Try to fly on your first or second morning. If the weather cancels the flight, you then still have time to rebook.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Warm layers: a fleece and a windproof jacket. The heat from the burner only reaches your head.
  • Closed flat shoes for the field landing.
  • A hat, to protect you from the burner's heat and from the sun later.
  • A camera or phone on a wrist strap. Drones are not allowed.
  • Cash for tips (roughly 20–50 MAD for the crew) is appreciated but optional.

Quick Answers to Common Questions

How long is the whole experience?

Plan on 4–5 hours from pickup to drop-off. About an hour of that is flying. The rest is transfers, inflation, landing and breakfast, so don't book anything else before about 11:00.

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

Cancellations happen on perhaps a handful of mornings a month, most often in winter when fog or wind comes in. Sometimes the pilot only decides at the launch site. You will then be offered another date or a full refund.

Is there a weight or age limit?

Operators rarely publish strict weight limits. Tell them if a passenger weighs over roughly 120 kg so they can balance the basket. The minimum age is usually 5–6, and very young children need to be tall enough to see over the basket rim.

Is It Worth It?

If you want one quiet, memorable morning away from the noise of the medina, yes. The flight makes a good contrast with a day in the souks, and you are back by late morning with time for a nap before an afternoon in the blue gardens of Jardin Majorelle. To see where it fits in a short stay, look at our three-day Marrakech plan or the wider list of top Marrakech activities.

Private or Shared Basket?

A shared basket is fine for most travellers. You are standing in compartments of four to five people, and everyone gets a railing spot. A private basket is worth considering for a proposal, an anniversary, or families with young children who need space. It also lets you choose a quieter pickup time and have breakfast on your own.
