What to Pack for Morocco: A Season-by-Season Packing List

Pack in layers rather than for a single climate — a typical Morocco itinerary moves between warm cities, cool mountain passes and a Sahara Desert night in the same week, and modest, breathable clothing works better than shorts and tank tops for both cultural fit and sun/dust protection.

Clothing Basics

Lightweight long trousers and long-sleeve shirts are more practical than they sound — they protect against sun, dust and evening chill better than shorts, and fit more comfortably into mosque courtyards, medinas and rural towns where modest dress is appreciated. Pack a warm layer regardless of season (evenings in Fes, the Atlas passes, and especially the Sahara get cold), and a scarf that doubles as sun cover, wind protection and modesty layer when visiting religious sites.

Footwear

Comfortable closed walking shoes are the single most important item — medina cobblestones, Volubilis's uneven ruins, and desert dune-climbing all favor real shoes over sandals. A second, lighter pair is worth the space for hot city afternoons.

Sun and Skin

Morocco's sun is strong even in "cool" months — sunscreen, a hat, and lip balm matter more than travelers expect, particularly at altitude in the Atlas Mountains and in the dry desert air.

Practical Extras

A reusable water bottle, a small day pack for guided walking tours, a portable charger (useful on longer driving days), and a padlock if your riad offers lockers. Cash in small denominations is genuinely useful — many smaller shops, cafes and tips are cash-only.

What Not to Bring

You don't need excessive luggage — most of our itineraries, including the 13 day tour, let you leave the bulk of your bags in the vehicle overnight in the Sahara, bringing only a small overnight bag into camp.
