Tangier to Chefchaouen: Is It Worth Adding to Your Itinerary?

Tangier is worth adding to a longer Morocco itinerary if you have 13+ days and want the north — its old medina, Cap Spartel's view across to Europe, and Hercules Cave are genuinely distinct from anything further south, and it sets up a natural, scenic route down through Tetouan to Chefchaouen.

What Makes Tangier Different

Sitting where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and facing Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar (visible on a clear day), Tangier has a genuinely different character from Morocco's other major cities — a long history as an international port city with French, Spanish and British influence layered onto the older medina, and a literary legacy (Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Beat writers all spent time here) that gives it a distinct identity.

Cap Spartel and Hercules Cave

A short drive from the city, Cap Spartel marks the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, with a lighthouse and genuinely striking coastal views. Nearby Hercules Cave, according to legend the mythological hero's resting place, is worth the stop mainly for its famous sea-facing opening, shaped like a map of Africa.

Is It Worth the Extra Days?

If your trip is 8 or 11 days, we'd generally route you through Rabat to Chefchaouen directly rather than adding Tangier — the extra driving day is better spent elsewhere. If you have 13 or more days, Tangier adds a genuinely different flavor to the trip and sets up a scenic, historically rich route south through Tetouan's old medina before Chefchaouen.
