Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Sahara Desert Gateway Should You Choose?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has taller, more photogenic dunes and is reached via Fes and the Ziz Valley; Zagora (Erg Chigaga) is reached via Ouarzazate, sits further from the tallest dunes, and gets noticeably fewer visitors. For a first Morocco trip focused on classic Sahara scenery, Merzouga is the better choice — which is why every one of our itineraries routes through it.

The Dunes Themselves

Erg Chebbi's dunes at Merzouga reach up to 150 metres and sit close enough to the access road that you're walking on genuine sand-sea scenery within an hour of arriving. Erg Chigaga near Zagora is actually Morocco's largest dune field, but the tallest dunes are a longer 4x4 or camel approach from where the paved road ends, which adds a half-day to reach comfortably.

The Drive to Get There

Merzouga is typically reached from Fes via Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz Valley — a scenic 6–7 hour drive that's an attraction in its own right, passing cedar forests, Barbary ape territory and palm-lined river valleys. Zagora is usually reached from Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley, a similarly long drive through different but equally striking scenery, including North Africa's longest river valley.

Crowds and Atmosphere

Merzouga has more infrastructure — more camps, more choice of luxury vs budget, easier logistics — which also means more visitors during peak season (October–April). Zagora is quieter and feels more remote, which appeals to travelers who've already done a "classic" Morocco trip and want something less trodden.
