Marrakech vs Fes: Which Imperial City Should You Visit First?

Fes is the more historically intact, traditional medina experience; Marrakech is livelier, more tourism-built-up, and a better base for day trips and nightlife. On every one of our itineraries you get both, but if forced to choose one, Fes rewards travelers who want authenticity over polish, and Marrakech rewards those who want more restaurants, riads and energy.

The Medinas Themselves

Fes el Bali feels genuinely medieval — narrower, more maze-like, still functioning as a real working city rather than a district built around tourism. Marrakech's medina is larger in tourist infrastructure terms, with more riads, more restaurants catering to visitors, and a livelier atmosphere, especially around Jemaa el-Fnaa at night, but somewhat less "untouched" as a result.

What Each City Is Actually Known For

Fes is Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital — Al Quaraouiyine university, the tanneries, the deepest concentration of traditional craft workshops. Marrakech is the tourism and culture capital — the Majorelle Gardens, El Bahia Palace, a livelier souk scene, and the launch point for day trips to the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira or the Sahara.

Practical Differences That Matter

Marrakech has more flight connections (including budget European routes), more riad and hotel choice at every price point, and a more developed restaurant scene. Fes requires a bit more effort to reach and has fewer high-end dining options, but rewards that effort with a noticeably less touristic feel in the medina itself.

Why We Route Both, in This Order

Every one of our tours visits Fes before Marrakech, following the loop north from Casablanca through Rabat, Meknes and Volubilis to Fes, then south through the Sahara to Marrakech last. This order works well logistically (it's the natural geography) and narratively — Fes gives you the older, denser medina experience first, and Marrakech's livelier energy makes a strong, relaxed final stop before flying home, as on our 8 day tour.
